(Sword-drawing art)
Iaidō (居合道) is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes being aware at all times and capable of quickly drawing your sword in responding to a sudden attack. Iaido consists of four main components: the smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard (or saya), striking or cutting an opponent, shaking blood from the blade (chiburui), and replacing the sword in the scabbard.
Our Iaido program at Aiki Canada has been designed specifically for youth and adults (14 years to 70 plus) who want to learn Japanese sword drawing art of Iaido. At Aiki Canada, beginning practitioners of iaido begin learning with a wooden sword ((bokutō 木刀)) and over time with regular practice, will advance to using a blunt-edged sword called an iaitō or mogitō. Over may years of iaido practice, the experience iaido students and/or instructor will advance to using a sharp-edged swords known as shinken. This is usually at the 4th or 5th dan (Black Belt level). Iaido classes will be taught by Ohmi Sensei.
The ryus or ryuha (流) (meaning style, system or school) taught at Aiki Canada are:
Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryū (無双直伝英信流 or 無雙直傳英信流) is a Japanese "koryu bujutsu" sword art school with direct lineage back over four hundred plus years (Muromachi period) to its founder Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu and one of the most widely practiced schools of iai in the world. Often referred to simply as "Eishin-ryū,
“Seitei” or “Zen Ken Ren Iai (ZNKI)”
Students will have the opportunity to learn and progress through regular training to 3rd to 1st kyu and to the black belt level starting with Shodan (1st dan black belt). In this class we ask that all students to wear blue keikogi (top) and black hakama (samurai skirt). This clothing can be purchase through Kancho Sensei Harrison.
Class Schedule
Day/Time: Thursday 5:00 - 6:30 pm (90 minute class)
Location: 144 Fernhill Boulevard (Fernhill Community Centre), Oshawa. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before class and enter from the west side of the building (down the ramp).
