Gendai Bushi (Modern Warrior)
Begins MARCH 2026

The Gendai Bushi (modern warrior) street combat program is a reality based combat system (art of Kokoro Aikibujutsu) developed by Norm Harrison based on his extensive training in the martial arts over 45 years, and working with individuals, security and police personnel on developing tactical self-defense programs.  This program offers a wide range of practical self-defense skills, physical, and psychological benefits.

Practical Self-Defense Skills

  • Situational Awareness: Training enhances your ability to scan your surroundings, recognize potential dangers, and avoid confrontation before it starts. The best self-defense is often avoidance.

  • Effective, Efficient Techniques: Programs focus on simple, direct, and aggressive moves designed to end a confrontation quickly in real-world, unpredictable scenarios (e.g., against weapons or multiple attackers (randori)).

  • Reaction Under Pressure: Training in realistic scenarios, often involving surprise attacks and adrenal stress, helps you learn to react instinctively (second nature) and stay composed when a situation turns physical.

  • Manage Distance and Footwork: You learn how to control the space between you and an attacker, using quick, agile footwork to evade or move into a defensive position.

  • Ground Defense: Ground fighting and grappling techniques from arts like Jujutsu are vital if a fight goes to the ground, teaching you how to control an opponent or get back to your feet quickly.

  • Proper Striking Mechanics: Learning how to strike (finger, wrist, hand, punches, kicks, elbows, knees, head, body) properly not only to increase effectiveness but also reduces the risk of injury.

Physical Benefits

  • Improved Fitness: These programs provide an intense, full-body workout that builds muscle, strengthens the core, and boosts cardiovascular health and stamina.

  • Agility and Speed: Dynamic movements and constant motion improve your overall coordination, balance, agility, and speed.

  • Strength and Conditioning: Consistent training develops functional strength and endurance, which are crucial advantages in a physical altercation.

  • Flexibility and Mobility: Many programs incorporate movements that enhance flexibility and range of motion, which can aid in overall movement and injury prevention.

Psychological Benefits

  • Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem: Gaining proficiency in self-defense techniques significantly boosts self-confidence, changing your body language and making you a less likely target for bullies or attackers.

  • Mental Toughness: Training helps develop mental resilience, discipline, and the ability to manage stress and panic in high-pressure situations.

  • Discipline and Self-Control: Most quality programs emphasize self-restraint and discipline, teaching that physical force should only be used as a last resort in genuine self-defense scenarios.

  • Community and Social Interaction: Training alongside others who share similar interests can foster a sense of community and provide a positive social environment.

Kokoro Aikibujutsu is a combat system of practical, effective martial techniques that emphasize cultivating a strong, calm spirit while harmonizing with an opponent's energy to achieve control or subdual.

Ultimately, the key benefit of Gendai Bushi street combat training program is not about learning to fight, but about empowering you with the skills and mindset to avoid violence and, if avoidance fails, to survive and escape a dangerous situation safely.

In the Gendai Bushi program you will learn break falls, rolls, blocks, parring, strikes, avoidance techniques, joint locks, throws, takedowns, pins, submissions, pressure points, weapon self-defense, combat against weapon strikes, and meditation.

Students in the Gendai Bushi (Modern Warrior) program will have the opportunity to progress through our belt ranking system (White, Orange, Green, Brown and Black). The Gendai Bushi program is situated for students who have already obtained some experience/training either in the martial arts or on the street (school of hard knocks).
